US study finds reduced numbers of crop-damaging pests on corn farms that adjoin those growing GM crops

Farmers growing conventional corn next to GM crops can benefit from the reduction in crop-destroying pests without paying the premium for GM seeds, a new study has shown. The research, published today in the journal Science, examined 14 years of records in the top US corn-producing states of Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin, looking at the prevalence of the European corn borer, a moth whose caterpillars eat into corn stalks and topple the plants.

Red.: The October 2010 issue of Science magazine included a study by Hutchinson et al "Areawide Suppression of European Corn Borer with Bt Maize Reaps Savings to Non-Bt Maize Growers" which examines the communal benefits of biotech maize plantings. The "halo effect" from biotech crops has long been recognized -- this is when Bt corn planted near non-Bt corn can provide the unmodified plants with indirect protection from pests. The Hutchinson study is the first to report an economic analysis of the halo effect based on large-scale, long-term data. The study shows that cumulative benefits over 14 years of biotech crops are an estimated $3.2 billion for maize growers in three U.S. states, with more than $2.4 billion of this total accruing to non-Bt maize growers. · Currently Bt maize is grown on 63% of the US maize area · Bt protects the maize against the most widespread insect pest throughout the US corn belt: the European corn borer, which used to cause losses estimated at $1 billion/year. · Bt maize has remained effective against the European Corn borer for more than a decade · The effectiveness of Bt caused an areawide suppression of the European Corn Borer · Therefore non-Bt growers also benefit from the protective “halo effect”.
